Sierra Leone bans child marriage

Sierra Leone signed into law a law to protect girls in the West African country where about a third are married before adulthood,” President Julius Maada Bio said.

The law is widely celebrated. It makes it a criminal offense to marry any girl under 18 years of age. Violators face up to 15 years in prison or a fine of approximately $4,000. Witnesses to such marriages also face imprisonment or a fine.
