Piebalgs defends investment in development aid

In an interview with Radio 24 , Andris Piebalgs defends the use of European public money for development aid, even in  times of crisis, as after all Europe is still one of the richest areas on the planet.

Solidarity towards the poor is an important value. Furthermore, globalisation means that what happens to the world affects us more and more directly. Therefore, there is urgent need for EU humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees and displaced persons. If we manage to break the “vicious circle” of poverty, Europe will also benefit, in the form of greater exports to Africa and elsewhere, thereby ensuring European jobs and other economic benefits. The EU is the world’s leading donor in terms of development aid, and has adopted a long-term commitment to increasing access to drinking water. Meanwhile, food prices are a “huge challenge” for the EU.
