Queiroz on Kaizer Chiefs wish list

Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz is on the wish list of leading South African club Kaizer Chiefs after they fired Serb Vladimir Vermezovic this week.

The former Real Madrid manager and twice assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United has steered Iran to the final Asian qualifying phase for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Speaking after the three-year reign of Vermezovic came to end with only two League Cup titles to show for his efforts, team managerBobby Motaung said the most popular South African football club were interested in Queiroz.

He is a former coach of South Africa, leading the country through a successful qualifying campaign for the 2002 World Cup only to be axed before the finals in South Korea and Japan after a poorAfrica Cup of Nations showing.

Chiefs have put former midfield stars Theophilus ‘Doctor’ Khumalo, Arthur Zwane and Donald ‘Ace’ Khuse in charge until the end of the season next month with the club chasing a league-and-cup double.

They host Free State Stars Saturday in a South African FA Cup quarter-final and are six points behind co-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in the title race with a game in hand.
