Minister for Transport Collins Dauda told a press briefing in Accra that the government was in the process of finalising financial arrangements for the design and construction process. Ghana currently has only one international airport at the heart of the capital city.
In addition to the existing facility in Tamale, the country also has other smaller facilities in Kumasi and Sunyani, 221 kms and 400 kms north of the capital, respectively.
The minister said the project would expand and upgrade the existing Tamale airport into an international one to serve as an alternative facility to the airport in Accra. “It will also operate as a hub for sub-regional flights,” Dauda added.
The minister said government had also factored in 10 million Ghana cedis ($6.41 million) in the next year’s budget for rehabilitation works on the Kumasi and Sunyani runways.
